Acura
http://www.acura.com/
To my mind this site features too much flashiness that detract from the quality information that it contains. I'm also not fond of the dark background and white text - hard on the eyes. Acura should keep in mind that people come to their site to get information about cars not to be wowed by fancy web design.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. No turnaround guarantee is given although the FAQ indicates that you should hear back within 24 hours from your selected dealer.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor are you shown available inventory until you enter this information. In the interior and exterior accessory section you have to hover over the accessory link to see how much it costs - why not have the price shown to the right of the text link?
How to:
- Configure a car
Hover over the Build & Price heading at the very top of the page and then select your model below. Select your trim level and then click on the red CONTINUE button. Choose colours and accessories. At the end of the process you can request a quote and/or check inventory at local dealers.
- Search for a new car
Once you have configured a car (above) you can check inventory by going to the Request a Quote link - after entering your contact information and clicking on the CONTINUE button you'll be shown dealers and their inventory.
- Search for a used car
Go to the Quick Vehicle Search at the bottom of the page. Enter your zip code and select a model (or leave at the default of All Models) and click on the SUBMIT button. You'll see vehicles within 50 miles of your zip code - you can re-sort the list by year, model, colour, price, mileage, type of transmission and distance from your location. From within the search results you can modify the search to look further afield or further delineate your criteria.
- Locate a dealer
Simply type in your zip code in the Dealer Locator box in the top right-hand corner of the page and click on the GO button.
- Find recall information
Input your VIN and click on the Submit button.

Audi of America
http://www.audiusa.com/
Another site that I find annoying for its unasked for movie on entry and its dull colour scheme. The site is also short on useful basics like a model overview that would allow you to see pricing and feature information at a glance (the all models view - see link in configure a car - has pricing but not other information).
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. A turnaround guarantee of 24-48 hours is given in the quote request process.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process. There doesn't seem to be any way to look at inventory of new cars on lots nearby. You do not get to select a dealer to receive your quote.
How to:
- Configure a car
Select your model by clicking on the graphic, then select the 'Build your own' link below the picture. Select powertrain, exterior, interior and options. After you have finished configuring the car you can request a quote, print the configuration you've created or start over.
- Search for a new car
No obvious way to access Audi new inventory online.
- Search for a used car
Use either the quick or advanced search (more criteria, lower down on the page) by entering your criteria and then click on the box with the right-pointing triangle to execute your search.
- Locate a dealer
Search within 10-400 miles of your zip code or city.
- Find recall information
There is no recall information available on the Audi website.

BMW of North America
http://www.bmwusa.com/
This site is elegant and simple with easy navigation. The site has a lot of interesting additional information and an easy-on-the-eyes design and appearance without flashy and distracting add ons.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use and has the added feature of giving you 360 degree and front, back and side views of your vehicle within the configurator itself (cool). Once you've finished configuring your vehicle you can save it to your garage. The quote request page is secure (well done BMW!).
Cons:
You are not shown available inventory and no turnaround guarantee is given when you request a quote.
How to:
- Configure a car
Select your model and then select interior and exterior colours, options and accessories. When you've finished the configuration you can request a quote or test drive, estimate your payments, save your BMW or print out the configuration.
- Search for a new car
BMW inventory of new cars is not online.
- Search for a used car
Select the body style or series you are interested in and then choose your price limit, transmission type and distance from your zip code (10 miles to no limit) in the drop down boxes on the right. Click on the small Search button in the bottom right-hand corner to execute the search.
- Locate a dealer
Input your zip code (or choose your state) and click on the Search button just to the left of the bottom of the picture.
- Find recall information
There is some recall information on the contact us page (link above) but there doesn't seem to be a centralized place to go for general recall information on the BMW site.

Buick | New 2009 Cars and New 2009 Crossovers
http://www.buick.com/
An intuitive and easy-to-use website with a speedy and simple configurator. Inventories of both new and used vehicles are online and locating a dealer is simple.
Pros:
The configurator works well and is straightforward and quick. Once you've configured the vehicle you've got a lot of options including requesting a quote, locating a similarly configured vehicle on a dealer's lot, estimating payments, saving the vehicle to "MY SAVED INFO" or comparing your configured cars to other vehicles. A turnaround guarantee of 24 hours is given if you request a quote or other information from a dealer.
Cons:
Collection of your personal information is not done on a secure page.
How to:
- Configure a car
From the All Vehicles screen simply click on the "Build Your Own" link underneath the vehicle you are interested in. Next enter your zip code and then select the trim level you want. Then just follow the steps to customize your Buick.
- Search for a new car
You can search for a new car in two ways - you can configure a vehicle as explained above and then click on the "View Local Inventory" link shown below the graphic in the middle of the page (left hand side). Or you can click on the link above and put in your zip code and search radius and then create a search for the vehicle you are looking for.
- Search for a used car
Input your zip code and select the car age, make and model you are interested in. You'll be shown a list that can be re-sorted by make, model, year, price, colour, mileage and dealership name (but unfortunately the list can not be sorted by distance from your location)
- Locate a dealer
Search by zip code, city/state or dealer name.
- Find recall information
If you own a Buick (or other GM vehicle) you can sign up at the GM Owner Center and receive recall information that way - you can also call 1-800-422-8425 to investigate whether there are any recalls outstanding against your vehicle.

Luxury Cars & Sport Utility Vehicles at Cadillac.com
http://www.cadillac.com/
A classically elegant site that's easy to navigate and use. A bit monochromatic but in this arena simple and non-flashy is a welcome change. New and used inventories online. If you click on the 'Build your Cadillac' link in the lower right hand area of the page you'll see a helpful overview of the Cadillac models and their starting prices.
Pros:
The configurator works well and is straightforward and quick. Once you've configured the vehicle you can search inventory or request a quote. A one business-day turnaround guarantee is given.
Cons:
There doesn't seem to be a save feature that would allow you to save the configuration and come back to it at a later time (perhaps to run ongoing checks on availability for example). Collection of your personal information is not done on a secure page.
How to:
- Configure a car
Enter your zip code and click on GO. Select your model by clicking on the desired graphic then follow the steps to select style, colours and options.
- Search for a new car
There are two ways to search for a new vehicle on the Cadillac site. You can configure a vehicle using the previous link (Configure a car) and then use the LOCATE A VEHICLE link when you are viewing the summary of your configured vehicle. Alternatively, you can use the link above to search for a vehicle on a lot near you without going through the configuration process.
- Search for a used car
Use the Quick Search box in the upper left-hand portion of the screen to perform a simple search using make, model, year and your zip code. You'll be shown a list that can be re-sorted by make, model, year, price, colour, mileage and dealership name (but unfortunately the list can not be sorted by distance from your location)
- Locate a dealer
Input your zip code and the distance to search (25-500 miles).
- Find recall information
If you own a Cadillac (or other GM vehicle) you can sign up at the GM Owner Center and receive recall information that way - you can also call 1-800-422-8425 to investigate whether there are any recalls outstanding against your vehicle.

Chevrolet | 2009 Cars, SUV's, Trucks, Crossovers & Vans
http://www.chevrolet.com/
A colourful, modern site that is still simple and easy to navigate. New and used inventories are online and dealers are quickly and easily located.
Pros:
This configurator is a winner - the white background and previous and next buttons at the top allow you to know exactly where you are in the process and how to get to the next step. A turnaround guarantee of one business day is given.
There are two ways to search for a new vehicle on the Chevrolet site.
Input your zip code in the box in the lower left hand area of the main page and click on the Find button.
- Find recall information
If you own a Chevrolet (or other GM vehicle) you can sign up at the GM Owner Center and receive recall information that way - you can also call 1-800-422-8425 to investigate whether there are any recalls outstanding against your vehicle.

Official Chrysler site - Autos, Cars, Minivans, SUVs, Convertibles, Sedans, Crossovers
http://www.chrysler.com/
The Chrysler site is relatively simple in design and navigation but seems to be lacking in terms of a few basics - for example I was unable to find anything on the site that allowed you to see an overview of all Chrysler vehicles in terms of pricing and models. Inventory of new and used vehicles is available online.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. After you have configured the car you can check for similar cars on nearby dealer lots. You can view a window sticker on new cars in inventory (you'll see vehicle details on used cars) and VIN is shown (for both new and used).
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor is a turnaround guarantee given. You are not given an option to save your configured car.
How to:
- Configure a car
On the main page click on the Build My Own link (in the row of headings across the top of the page) then select the vehicle you are interested in by clicking on the appropriate vehicle graphic. On the next screen follow the steps to select colours, options and accessories. Once you have configured the car you can request a quote, search inventory or print the summary.
- Search for a new car
From the main page select the Search New Inventory heading underneath the "SHOPPING TOOLS" heading. Select a vehicle and input your zip code and click on the right arrow. On the next screen click on the dealership name on the map to see matching vehicles (if there are matches they will be indicated on the map).
- Search for a used car
Enter your zip code and then select your used vehicle criteria (model, age range, maximum price, maximum mileage and distance from your zip code) then click on the SEARCH FOR A VEHICLE button. Vehicles can be re-sorted by make, model, year, price and exterior colour. Unfortunately the list cannot be sorted by either distance from you or mileage.
- Locate a dealer
Enter your zip code and click on the right arrow to see dealers in your area.
- Find recall information
Enter the last 8 characters from your VIN in the box at the bottom of the 'About My Vehicle' box in the upper left-hand corner of the page, use a radio button to select your country and click on the GO button to find recall information on your vehicle. Well done Chrysler!

Official Dodge Site - New Autos, Trucks, Minivans, SUVs, Cars, Wagons
http://www.dodge.com/
A colourful, interesting and modern site that is simply laid out and easy to use and navigate. New and used inventory is online and finding a dealer is a snap.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. You can search both new and used inventory online.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor is a turnaround guarantee given.
Well done Dodge!

Ford - Cars, SUVs, Trucks & Crossovers | Ford Vehicles
http://www.fordvehicles.com/
The Ford site is simple and easy to navigate but still has some colour and personality. Dealer inventories of both new and used vehicles are online (although the used is a bit tricky to find) and finding a dealer is a snap.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use and features 360 degree views and additional information throughout.
Cons:
The earlier noted secure form for your information when requesting a quote is gone and there is no turnaround guarantee evident. There is no ability to save details of your configured car or send it to someone else.
How to:
- Configure a car
Click on the graphic that represents the model you are interested in. For the purpose of this review we are presuming on the next page you will select the "Build Your Own" link. Enter your zip code and click on the CONTINUE button. Select your model and follow the steps until you have configured your vehicle. You can request a quote on your configured vehicle or look for it in inventory.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is online but (foolishly) Ford has decided not to make it directly available from the configuration screen. When you finish configuring your vehicle you might think that the SEARCH INVENTORY button would show you similar vehicles on a nearby lot but you'd be wrong! Instead what happens when you click this button is you are asked to submit a non-secure form with your details and local dealerships will look for your vehicle. Not what I expected (or wanted) at all.
To search inventory on your own select the Search Dealer Inventory link on the main page (in the Shopping Tools box in the lower left hand corner) and follow the instructions.
- Search for a used car
Click on the Search Local Inventory link in the blue box in the upper left hand corner of the screen. On the next page put in your zip code and your search criteria and click on the NEXT button. The resulting list can be re-sorted by distance, mileage, price and year. VIN is indicated on vehicles as well as a lot of other information that some sites don't include - well done Ford!
- Locate a dealer
Enter your zip code or city/state and click on the SEARCH button.
- Find recall information
You must register on the site above to receive recall information on your specific vehicle.

GMC | 2009 New Trucks, New SUVs, New Pick ups, New Vans
http://www.gmc.com/
An intuitive and easy-to-use website with a speedy and simple configurator. Unfortunately the whole process breaks down a bit once you've configured the vehicle.
Pros:
The configurator works well and is straightforward and quick. Both new and used inventory is online.
Cons:
Once you've configured the vehicle it is not straightforward to search for that vehicle on nearby lots - in fact I would suggest that you not approach looking for new inventory by configuring a vehicle but rather just search directly. Collection of your personal information is not done on a secure page and no turnaround guarantee is given.
How to:
- Configure a car
From the main page click on the Build Your GMC link underneath the SHOPPING TOOLS heading on the left hand side of the page (about halfway down). On the next screen input your zip code and click on GO. Click on the graphic of the vehicle you wish to build and simply follow the steps.
- Search for a new car
Input your zip code and search radius (5-100 miles) and click on the red LOCATE button. Select your vehicle on the next page and indicate some basic configuration details (2WD/4WD/AWD) and click on the red SELECT button. Finally select your trim level and click on the red SELECT button. Once you've got matching vehicles up at local dealerships you'll be able to view window stickers, request a quote or schedule a test drive.
- Search for a used car
Use the Quick Search box in the top left hand corner to input your make, model and year search criteria and your zip (or you could click on the Advanced Search link if you want more criteria). You'll be shown a list that can be re-sorted by make, model, year, price, colour, mileage and dealership name (but unfortunately the list can not be sorted by distance from your location)
- Locate a dealer
Search by zip code, city/state or dealer name.
- Find recall information
If you own a GMC (or other GM vehicle) you can sign up at the GM Owner Center and receive recall information that way - you can also call 1-800-422-8425 to investigate whether there are any recalls outstanding against your vehicle.

Honda Cars - New and Certified Used Cars from American Honda
http://automobiles.honda.com/
A straightforward site design with a pleasing colour palette and easy navigation. The major deficiency that one notices soon after you get in to the site is the lack of new inventory online - inventory is in fact available online but you have to configure a car AND partially request a quote before you can access it and even then it is far from optimally set up. Used inventory is easily accessible online and locating a dealer is a simple step on the main page.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use and used inventory is online and quickly accessible.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor are you shown available inventory on dealer lots until you have configured a car (and even then all you are shown is that there is a vehicle matching your configured one on a dealer's lot - you're not given any details about the vehicle, shown a window sticker or offered any helpful information). There is no turnaround guarantee given. There is no way to save the configured vehicle for future reference.
How to:
- Configure a car
On the main page select your model from the row of pictures across the middle of the page. On the next page click on the Build Your XXX (where XXX is the model you've selected) link under the Shopping Tools heading on the left hand side. Then follow the steps until you have finished configuring your vehicle. Once the vehicle is configured you may estimate payments, email the configuration to a friend, see the configuration in a printer friendly format or request a quote.
- Search for a new car
Go throught the configuration process detailed above and request a quote. Input your personal information and then click on the Submit button. When you finally get to the Select a Dealer part of the process you'll be able to see new inventory online (sort of - see comments in Cons above).
- Search for a used car
Put in your zip code, distance to search from your zip code (15-250 miles), model, age range and price limit in the box in the upper right hand area of the page. The displayed results can be re-sorted by year, model, colour, price, mileage, transmission type and distance from your zip code.
- Locate a dealer
On the main page click on the blue "Find a Dealer" link in the very bottom left hand corner of the page. Simply put in your zip code and click on the FIND A DEALER button to search.
- Find recall information
Generalized recall information (not specific to a single VIN) is not available on the Honda site. The only way to find out if your vehicle is affected is by telephoning Honda (1-800-999-1009) or registering for their Owner Link service and inputting your vehicle's VIN.

HUMMER | 2009 SUV Truck Models | 4x4 Trucks
http://www.hummer.com/hummerjsp/home.jsp
Hummer gets off on the wrong foot in my book with its emphasis on fancy graphics and geegaws - not everyone has a fast connection and more importantly most of us want information and hard facts - not bandwidth munching images. Despite this criticism the site is elegantly and attractively designed. There is no access to new or used Hummer inventory through the site.
Pros:
There is a basic configurator on the Hummer site.
Cons:
You cannot request a quote through the Hummer site - you are instructed to print out your configured Hummer details and take the print out with you to a Hummer dealer.
How to:
- Configure a car
Select your model of interest from below the Build A Hummer link and follow the instructions.
- Search for a new car
Hummer new inventory is not available online.
- Search for a used car
Hummer used inventory is not available online.
- Locate a dealer
Click on the Locate A Dealer link (very top right hand corner). Then enter your zip code and the distance to search within (25-250 miles) or search by city/state or dealer name.
- Find recall information
No recall information is available online for the Hummer.

Hyundai Motor America: New Cars, Sedans, Coupes, SUVs, Minivans, Vehicles
http://www.hyundaiusa.com/
A perfectly okay site with pleasant images, effective design and easy navigation. However neither new nor used inventory seem to be available online.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use but is, in my opinion, anemic in its colour scheme which makes it not only boring but hard to read (so much grey). A turnaround guarantee of 24 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) is offered.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process. You cannot save your configuration details or email them to a friend.
How to:
- Configure a car
Click on the graphic for the model you are interested in. Then input your zip code and follow the steps. When you are finished configuring the vehicle you can request a quote or print the page.
- Search for a new car
Inventory is not available online.
- Search for a used car
Inventory is not available online.
- Locate a dealer
Input your zip code and click on the Search button.
- Find recall information
No recall information is available online.

Infiniti Luxury Cars, SUVs, Crossovers - Infiniti USA Official Site
http://www.infiniti.com/
This site is a little more colourful than it used to be but I am not a fan of the black background. Neither new nor used inventory seems to be online.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process, no turnaround guarantee is given and neither new nor used inventory is available online. There is no way to save the configured vehicle details nor is the previously available "email configuration to a friend" feature present.
How to:
- Configure a car
Select your vehicle and model by clicking on the appropriate photos and input your zip code in step 2. Then simply follow the steps until your vehicle is configured. Once you've configured the vehicle you can print the summary or send a quote request - that's it.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not available online.
- Search for a used car
Used inventory is not available online.
- Locate a dealer
Input your zip code in the "Locate a Retailer" box in the bottom left hand corner of the page and click on Go.
- Find recall information
No recall information is available on the site.

Jaguar US
http://www.jaguarusa.com/us/en/home.htm
An average site that really doesn't, in my opinion, reflect the elegance and style of the cars it represents. New inventory is not available online but used inventory is.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. Although the form where you enter personal information is not secure only your first and last name and email address are mandatory - no need to enter phone number or street address.
Cons:
You can no longer save your configured vehicle and there is no turnaround guarantee given when you request a quote. New inventory is not available online.
How to:
- Configure a car
Select a model by clicking on the appropriate button and then click on the SELECT button to further define your choice by trim level. Follow the steps until you reach NEXT STEPS. From here you can print the summary or request a quote.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not online (although you can get a dealer to search for your desired Jaguar using their inventory search service - click on the FIND YOUR XX - where XX is the model you are looking for - link on the main page in the upper right hand corner and follow the steps).
- Search for a used car
Input your zip code, distance to search within (25-200 miles), model, price range, year range and maximum mileage. The results list can be re-sorted by model, price, year, colour, body type, engine, mileage and dealership name (but unfortunately not by distance from your location).
- Locate a dealer
Locate a dealer by looking at a list by state, searching on dealer name or by entering your zip code.
- Find recall information
No recall information is available on the site.

Official Jeep Site - 4x4 SUV, Sport Utility Vehicle
http://www.jeep.com/
The Jeep site is relatively simple in design and navigation and you can easily get a sense of Jeep's vehicle line up from the main page. The various models - there are only 6 - are shown at the bottom of the page and if you hover over the graphics you'll see basic pricing information and fuel economy.
Hover over the graphic of the model you are interested in and then click on the Build My Own link that is displayed. Follow the 4 step process to reach the Summary. Once you've configured your Jeep you can print your summary, request a quote, estimate payments and find the vehicle in inventory.
- Search for a new car
On the main page click on the Shopping Tools heading and then select the Search New Inventory link underneath it. Select the vehicle you are looking for from the drop down list, enter your zip code and click on the right-facing triangle. On the next page you'll be shown dealerships in your area on a map. Roll over the dealership names to see how many matching vehicles they have in stock. Click on a dealership icon to look at the inventory in detail.
- Search for a used car
Enter your zip code and select the model, age range, maximum price, maximum mileage and distance from your zip code to search (10 miles to any distance). Click on the SEARCH FOR A VEHICLE button. Unfortunately the list can not be re-sorted by distance from your zip code but can be re-sorted by price, year, make, model and exterior colour.
- Locate a dealer
Enter your zip code in the orange box and click on the right-facing triangle. Or use the Advanced Search tab to look for a dealer by city/state or dealer name.
- Find recall information
Enter the last 8 characters from your VIN in the box at the bottom of the 'About My Vehicle' box in the upper left-hand corner of the page, use a radio button to select your country and click on the GO button to find recall information on your vehicle.

A colourful yet simple and effective site. Unfortunately neither new or used inventory is available online.

Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor is there any turnaround guarantee given. Neither new or used inventory is available online.
How to:

Land Rover US - Land Rover Vehicles - Overview
http://www.landrover.com/us/en/vehicles/home.htm
A simply arranged but effective site that makes good use of colours and graphics. Unfortunately neither new or used inventory is listed online.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. At the end of the configuration process you can print your summary, calculate monthly payments or contact a retailer. It is not completely clear to me whether you are attaching your configured vehicle details when you contact a retailer but I presume (hope) so. On the plus side - this contact form is secure so you can feel comfortable entering personal data.
Cons:
You can no longer save your configured vehicle details nor is a turnaround guarantee given on when the retailer will get back to you when you request a quote. Neither new or used inventory is listed online.
How to:
- Configure a car
Select the Land Rover you wish to configure by clicking on START BUILDING button underneath the picture. Then follow the steps to choose trim level, colours and options. When you are finished configuring the vehicle you can print the summary, calculate monthly payments or request a quote.

Lexus Models
http://www.lexus.com/models/
Although the Lexus site is visually rather blah it is okay from a 21st century vehicle shopper point of view. Unfortunately new Lexus inventory doesn't seem to be online (although used inventory is).
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use.
Cons:
You now need to specify your name, email address and phone number on a non-secure form and no turnaround guarantee is given when you request a quote. You can't save your configured vehicle information. New inventory is not available online.
How to:
- Configure a car
Simply click on the graphic of the model that you wish to build. On the next screen hover over the vehicle graphic and select the Build your XX link off to the right (where XX is the model that you selected). Enter your zip code and follow the on-screen instructions. When you have finished configuring the car you can email the configuration to a friend, see a printable version, apply for credit, estimate payments or request a quote.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not available online.
- Search for a used car
Enter your zip code in the box shown, select the model you are interested in and click Submit.
- Locate a dealer
On the main page enter your zip code in the Find A Dealer box top right-hand corner of the page) and click on the right-facing triangle.
- Find recall information
No recall information is available on the site.

Mercedes-Benz, Home of Mercedes-Benz Luxury Automobiles
http://www.mbusa.com/index.do
An elegant but to my mind somewhat dark site that unfortunately doesn't seem to have new inventory online. Used inventory is online and searchable though. Navigation is straightforward and the site is attractive without being laden with gimmicks. Despite this lack of gimmickry, even on a cable connection, the site seems sluggish.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. You can save the configured vehicle to your portfolio. Used inventory is online.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor is a turnaround guarantee given. New inventory is not online.
How to:
- Configure a car
Click on the Build a Vehicle link in the left hand lower corner of the page. Select your model and on the next screen select colours, options and accessories. Once you are finished configuring the vehicle you can save it to your portfolio, estimate payments, compare vehicles or contact a dealer to request a quote.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not available online.
- Search for a used car
Enter your zip code, distance to search from your zip (10 miles to NationWide), price range, engine type, colour, mileage, model year, transmission and features then click on Search. The resulting list can be re-sorted by model, year, price, mileage, colour and distance from your location.
- Locate a dealer
Click on the Find Dealer link in the top right hand area of the page. Enter your zip code in the box and click on the Find button.
- Find recall information
No recall information is available on the site.

Mitsubishi Motors
http://www.mitsubishicars.com/MMNA/jsp/allModels.do?loc=en-us
A simple rather monochromatic site that unfortunately does not have inventories of either new or used vehicles online.
Pros:
The configurator is supremely quick and easy to use as it consists of a single page where you indicate all your preferences (i.e. choose colours and options). You can print the details of your configured vehicle.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor is a turnaround guarantee given. You cannot save the vehicle configuration. No inventories are online (new or used).
How to:
- Configure a car
Click on the vehicle you are interested in and on the next page click on the Build & Price link in the column on the left hand side of the page. Choose your colours, trim level, options and accessories and when you are finished click on the Request a Quote button. The only things you can do when the vehicle is configured is request a quote or print the summary.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not online.
- Search for a used car
Used inventory is not online.
- Locate a dealer
Enter your zip code, city and state or dealer name and click on Submit.
- Find recall information
There is no recall information on the site.

NissanUSA
http://www.nissanusa.com/
This is an okay site but it's great that new inventory is online. However, I couldn't figure out a way to access used inventory.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. Once you've chosen a model and trim level and input your zip code you can search for the vehicle on a dealer's lot.
Cons:
The page where you input your personal information in the quote request process is not secure and no turnaround guarantee is given. I couldn't find any way to search for used Nissans online.
How to:
- Configure a car
Select the vehicle you want by clicking on the graphic for that car/truck. On the next page select the model by clicking on the appropriate graphic. Enter your zip code in the box displayed and click on the Next: Select Color button to move to the next step. Continue on through colours, transmission and options until you reach the summary in step 6. Once your configuration is complete you can request a quote, estimate payments, print the page or get pre-approved for financing.
- Search for a new car
Configure the vehicle using the "Configure a car" link above. When you reach the Summary stage click on the Search Inventory link (underneath the Request a Dealer Quote button) to search for a vehicle like the one you've configured on a nearby dealer's lot.
- Search for a used car
Used inventory is not online.
- Locate a dealer
Enter your zip code and miles to search from your zip (10-400) and then click on the Search button.
- Find recall information
The previously available recall information has disappeared from the site. Too bad!

Pontiac | New Cars: New SUVs: New Sports Cars: 2009 New Cars
http://www.pontiac.com/
A colourful site with both new and used inventory online. Configurator is quick and easy to use and quote request process is not too intrusive.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use - and all on a single page. You can also look for similar new vehicles on local lots. Used vehicles are also online. Once you have a summary you can print it, email it to a friend, compare it with other vehicles, view local inventory or contact a dealer.
Cons:
The page where you input your personal information in the quote request process is not secure and no turnaround guarantee is given.
How to:
- Configure a car
Choose the vehicle you want by clicking on the appropriate graphic on the bottom of the page. Then choose the Build Your Own tab underneath the graphic in the middle of the page. Choose the trim level you want by clicking on the Customize this Trim button for the model you want. Choose colour, packages etc and when you're done click on the Next: Summary link.
- Search for a new car
Configure the vehicle using the "Configure a car" link above. When you reach the Summary stage click on the View Local Inventory button (on the far left below the vehicle graphic) to search for a vehicle like the one you've configured on a nearby dealer's lot.
- Search for a used car
Use the Quick Search box in the top left hand corner to select your make, model and year and then input your zip code and click on the Search button.
- Locate a dealer
Enter your zip code and miles to search from your zip (5-150+) and then click on the Locate button. Or you can search by City/State or Dealer Name.
- Find recall information
If you own a Pontiac (or other GM vehicle) you can sign up at the GM Owner Center and receive recall information that way - you can also call 1-800-422-8425 to investigate whether there are any recalls outstanding against your vehicle.

Porsche
http://www.porsche.com/usa/
The Porsche site is elegantly simple and easy to use. Unfortunately new inventory is not online but you can search for pre-owned Porsche's on the site.
Pros:
The configurator works well and it is great fun adding a $3,000 paint job and $1,900 wheels to a vehicle. Although new inventory is not available online directly from the Porsche site you may be able to access it through a dealer's site.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor are you given a turnaround guarantee. I didn't find it immediately obvious how to move from Step 1 to 2 of the configuration process - after you have selected a model click on the trim level you want in the top left hand corner of the lower box in the configuration screen.
How to:
- Configure a car
Click on the Build Your Porsche link in the blue box in the lower left hand corner of the main page. Select your model, trim level, features, colours, wheels, options and 'custom tailoring'. When you have finished configuring the vehicle you can save your configured vehicle, print out a summary, estimate payments, download an application for credit or request a quote.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not online.
- Search for a used car
Select USA from the drop down list and then select your model, derivative, body type, price range, age range and input your zip code and distance to search within (15-500 miles). This tool is very cool because it allows you to see, before you even click Search, what vehicles are available in your area.
- Locate a dealer
Input your zip code in the box in the lower left hand corner of the page and click on the arrow.
- Find recall information
There is no recall information on the site.

Saturn | New 2009 Cars, SUVs, & Crossover Vehicles
http://www.saturn.com/saturn/SaturnIndex.jsp
A pleasant, simple, easy to use site that offers some neat features. Both new and used inventory are online.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. New inventory is accessible from within the configurator (after you've configured a vehicle) or from the main page.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor are you offered a turnaround guarantee. I also found it disturbing that when I selected the 'Confirm Price' option after configuring a vehicle I didn't see any indication that the configuration details I had chosen were being transferred to the dealer (in fact I was told to indicate my colour and option choices in the Message field provided - why did I bother to just configure the vehicle?). It is also annoying that you can't search for pre-owned Saturns from this site.
How to:
- Configure a car
From the main page click on the Build your own link in the lower left-hand corner of the page and then select a model to configure. Select trim level, colours, options and accessories. When you are done you can email a dealer/confirm the price (but neither transfers configuration information to the dealer) or locate the vehicle you have just configured.
- Search for a new car
Enter your zip code and search radius (5-100 miles) in Step 1 and click on the LOCATE button. In Step 2 select the vehicle and in Step 3 you can see inventory results for local dealers.
- Search for a used car
Select your model(s) and then your search criteria in the box on the right. When you are done click on the SEARCH button.
- Locate a dealer
Enter your zip code or city and state to find a retailer.
- Find recall information
If you own a Saturn (or other GM vehicle) you can sign up at the GM Owner Center and receive recall information that way - you can also call 1-800-422-8425 to investigate whether there are any recalls outstanding against your vehicle.

Subaru Cars, Wagons, SUVs, Crossovers | Subaru of America
http://www.subaru.com/
An average site that has lost marks since the last review as the ability to find new vehicles and used vehicles has become much more complicated and time consuming and the turnaround guarantee has disappeared - used inventory is still available online though.
Pros:
The configurator works well although it looks a bit washed out and grey to me.
Cons:
It is no longer possible to find new or used inventory online at several dealerships at once - what you can do is look at a single dealership at a time which is not that helpful. Why should I be forced to look for the car I want dealer by dealer instead of within a specified search radius?
You don't get a secure page for entering your personal information and the turnaround guarantee has disappeared (you will hear back from someone "shortly").
How to:
- Configure a car
On the main page hover over the graphic of the model you are interested in and click the blue BUILD button in the pop up window that appears. Select a model, colour and transmission, and accessories from the areas to the left and below the vehicle's graphic. When you have done configuring the vehicle you can request a quote, make an appointment for a test drive, check the value of any trade-in you have or estimate payments.
- Search for a new car
Enter your zip code or state and click on the right arrow. Click on the name of the dealership you are interested in and their website will be displayed. You may need to search around a bit to find their inventory online.
- Search for a used car
Enter your zip code or state and click on the right arrow. Click on the name of the dealership you are interested in and their website will be displayed. You may need to search around a bit to find their inventory online.
- Locate a dealer
Input your zip code or state and click on the right arrow. You'll be shown a map with icons representing the dealers as well as a list of dealers on the left hand side of the page.
- Find recall information
There is no recall information on the Subaru site.

Suzuki Auto / All Models
http://www.suzukiauto.com/2009/
A visually busy site but at least the previously noted automatic soundtrack is gone. Although some of the functionality has disappeared from the configurator, both new and used inventory is online.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. You can search for new and used cars easily on the site.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your personal information and the ability to send your quote request to more than one dealer is no longer available - the turnaround guarantee is also gone.
How to:
- Configure a car
Click on the vehicle you are interested in and then select trim, colours and options. When you are finished configuring the vehicle you can save your configured vehicle or request a quote.
- Search for a new car
Select your year, model, trim, drivetrain, transmission and colour and then input your zip or city/state combination and search radius (25-250 miles). Finally click on the FIND MY SUZUKI button to see vehicles that match your criteria.
- Search for a used car
There doesn't seem to be any other way to locate used Suzukis than using the same method as looking for new vehicles (but selecting All Years in the YEAR box). I tried this search with a variety of model choices but only saw vehicles from 2008 and 2009 so I am not sure whether used inventory is really online or not.
- Locate a dealer
Input your zip code in the Locate a Dealer box (top right hand vorner of the page) and click on GO.
- Find recall information
There is no recall information on the Suzuki site.

Toyota Cars, Trucks, SUVs & Accessories
http://www.toyota.com/
This stylish and elegant site surprisingly does not allow you to access new Toyota inventory online. You can search for used Toyotas however.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use. Used inventory can be accessed easily from the main page.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor is a turnaround guarantee given. You can not check for a vehicle that matches your configured details on a local dealership's lot.
How to:
- Configure a car
From the main page click on the green BUILD YOUR TOYOTA button in the top row of headings across the page (it's just a little to the right of middle). Enter your zip code and click on GO. Select a model by clicking on the graphic and then work through the steps to choose trim level, options, colours and accessories. Once you've configured your vehicle you can request a quote, print or email a summary, estimate payments or apply for credit.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not available online.
- Search for a used car
In the Find My Vehicle box (upper left hand corner of the page) input your zip code, search radius (25-unlimited miles), model and age range and click on Search. The resulting list can be re-sorted by year, model, price, mileage and distance from your zip.
- Locate a dealer
On the main page click on the green 'Find A Dealer' button in the top right-hand corner of the page. Enter your zip code in the box and click on the GO button.
- Find recall information
There is no recall information on the Toyota site.

Volkswagen of America
http://www.vw.com/
Volkswagen manages to keep on my good side by using geegaws like pop up graphics and animation sparingly so that they accentuate the site rather than overwhelm you. Unfortunately new inventory is not available online. Used inventory can be searched easily and quickly on the site however.
Pros:
The configurator is quick and easy to use and I like the way it is contained within a small box so you're not having to scroll around looking for the next button. The used inventory search is very well designed and highly efficient.
Cons:
You are not offered a secure page to input your information in the quote request process nor is a turnaround guarantee given. It is very disappointing that you can't access new inventory online.
How to:
- Configure a car
From the main page click on the graphic for the model you are interested in. Then click on the BUILD A XXX (where XXX is the model you've selected) link in the lower right hand area of the screen (above the row of vehicle graphics across the bottom of the screen). Select your trim level, colour and interior and options. When you are finished configuring the vehicle you can get a quote, print the summary page or locate a dealer.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not available online at VW.com.
- Search for a used car
Click on the pre-loved search button in the top left hand area of the screen. Click on as many models as you are interested in, select year(s) you want and then input your zip code and distance to search within (25-500 miles) and click on Search. You are shown a VERY cool results screen that can be re-sorted or refined on the fly (using sliders or must have features). Very well done!
- Locate a dealer
Search for a dealer by zip code or dealer name.
- Find recall information
No recall information is available on the Volkswagen site.

Volvo Cars | www.volvocars.us | Volvo Automobiles | New Volvo Models | Volvo Vehicles
http://www.volvocars.com/us/Pages/default.aspx
A dull site that seems to have fancy web geegaws to impress rather than doing anything useful. The site has also always seemed sluggish to me and the configurator unreliable. There is no way to see new inventory online but used inventory can be accessed.
Pros:
The configurator is easy to use. Used inventory can be accessed easily from the site.
Cons:
The configurator seems sluggish to me, your information is no longer collected on a secure form, no turnaround guarantee is given and you can't access new inventory online.
How to:
- Configure a car
Click on the model you are interested in and then click on the Next button (you may be prompted to enter your zip code if this is your first visit). Select the trim level and then select colours and options. When you have finished configuring the vehicle you can print or email the summary or request a quote.
- Search for a new car
New inventory is not available online.
- Search for a used car
Input your zip code, model, year range, price range and distance to search (10 miles to any distance). Click off the "Show only Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles" box if you'd like to see all the Volvos in the database. Click on the Next button. You can re-sort the results displayed by year, mileage, price or distance from your zip.

Input your zip code, city and state or dealer name and then press the SEARCH button in the lower right-hand corner of the page.
- Find recall information
There is no recall information available on the Volvo site.
