Is that used car deal too good to be true? These sites can help you learn about a car's real history.

HPI

HPI helps consumers check out the status of a used vehicle online before they view or buy it. The HPI Check costs £35.95 for one car.

The HPI Check will tell you if the vehicle is currently recorded as stolen, subject to outstanding finance, has been previously written off by an insurance company or has undergone a number plate change. The check also provides a Parker's valuation, plate transfer history, an optional Stolen MoT check and includes the HPI Guarantee providing coverage of up to £10,000.

The site offers secure purchasing of the HPI Check and is well laid out and easy to use. There is a helpful advice section (called 'Tips when buying') with a variety of articles and tips on used car buying.

Carwatch UK Vehicle Fraud Detection Service

The CarWatch service offers a single vehicle check for £19.95. This report is returned to you immediately after you have entered the car registration number and your credit card details. The report contains the date of first registration, if the car's colour has been changed, chassis/VIN and engine numbers, number of previous owners, date of last keeper change and if the car has been imported. The report will also let you know if the car is stolen or wanted by the police, if it has been involved in any accidents and if the number plate has been changed.

The site also includes some helpful information in the Help and Advice section although this is fairly brief. The New Users section explains the rationale for getting a used vehicle history when you are considering buying a used car.

The ordering section is on a secure page and the site is well-laid out and easy to use.
